During the May 12, 2026, episode of *First Take*, Smith revealed his top five landing spots for James in the 2026 offseason. His favorite team, the New York Knicks, topped the list, ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and retirement.
In Smith’s view, the move makes perfect sense. The Knicks could sign James without giving up any assets, and he would be an enormous commercial boost for a franchise valued at billions of dollars.
“By the way, you are the face of the New York Knicks, and the New York Knicks brand is you. Billionaire James Dolan—whatever you say about him, he knows how to make money—LeBron James on Wall Street? If he puts on a Knicks jersey, we’re talking about an easy half-billion dollars in his pocket.”
Additionally, if the Knicks fail to win a championship this year and James leads them to the title, the financial windfall could be even greater.

James’ next move remains uncertain. The Lakers were just eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Even James himself admitted he is unsure about his future.
Of course, joining New York would be an excellent option. James is one of the most recognizable players in NBA history, and his arrival would give the Knicks a massive boost.
Meanwhile, he has been with the Lakers since 2018, winning a championship with them. His son, Bronny James Jr., also plays for the Lakers. Therefore, a move to New York would have to make sense for both sides.
