Spurs Injury Report for Game 5: Fox Questionable, Wembanyama Avoids Suspension

Posted on: 05/13/2026

The Western Conference playoff series between the Minnesota Timberwolves and San Antonio Spurs has been a physical, hard-fought battle. After four games, the series is tied 2-2, with each team having won on the road. The intensity has been palpable: Victor Wembanyama was ejected from Game 4 for a flagrant 2 foul on Naz Reid, De’Aaron Fox played through a right leg injury after being knocked over by Ayo Dosunmu, and Anthony Edwards needed oxygen on the sideline multiple times. With the pivotal Game 5 approaching, injury updates and discipline decisions are critical.

With less than 24 hours until tip-off, the Spurs released their official injury report. Fox (left ankle soreness) is listed as questionable with a 50% chance of playing. As the team’s highest-paid player, Fox has been a defensive liability and inconsistent offensively. In nine playoff games, he’s averaging 18.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 1.3 steals, shooting 44.4% from the field, 31.1% from three-point range, and 68.4% from the free-throw line. NBA insider Kevin noted that Fox’s defense has been a weak point, and his absence might not be detrimental – coach Mitch Johnson could give more minutes to Stephon Castle and Harper.

The Spurs have a deep backcourt, so Fox’s absence or poor performance can be compensated. The biggest concern was whether Wembanyama would face a suspension or fine for his elbow on Reid. According to Shams Charania, Wembanyama will not be suspended or fined, allowing him to play in Game 5. Shams explained two reasons: First, Wembanyama played only 12 minutes and 29 seconds before being ejected, becoming the fastest All-Star ejected in a playoff game since the 1996-97 season. He essentially served a half-game suspension, and Reid did not leave the game. The Timberwolves capitalized on his absence to tie the series, making an additional suspension too harsh. Second, Wembanyama had no prior history of violent conduct, so the league decided to show leniency. However, this incident now marks a record of violent behavior, and he must control his emotions in the future.

Despite avoiding suspension, Wembanyama faces widespread criticism. Stephen A. Smith claimed the only reason he wasn’t suspended is that everyone wants to see him play. Kendrick Perkins argued that the league prioritized ratings and star power over a player’s health. Draymond Green pointed out a double standard, suggesting that if he had done the same, he would have faced severe punishment, while Wembanyama got off without even a fine. Green even hinted that someone should retaliate in Game 5. But revenge would only escalate issues. The hope is that both teams settle it with basketball, not controversial plays.
