Chen Haixian, a former winger for the Guangdong football team, was once hailed as a promising talent but ultimately fell short of expectations.
Born in 1963 in Wuhua County, Meizhou, Guangdong, Chen attended Shuizhai High School, a local football-focused school. His family initially opposed his pursuit of football due to safety concerns, but his persistence eventually won them over.
Chen joined the Guangdong youth team in 1978 under coaches Cai Tangyao and Gong Boqiang. The following year, he helped the team win the football competition for the youth category at the 4th National Games.
In 1983, after the 5th National Games, Chen was promoted to the senior Guangdong team, taking over the iconic number 9 jersey previously worn by “Flying General” Liu Quan. In his debut season, he scored seven goals.
One of his standout performances came during the 1986 FA Cup group stage against Sichuan, where he contributed a goal and an assist in a 2-0 victory. The following year, in the 10th Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup, Chen scored in the second leg after coming on as a substitute, helping Guangdong win 3-0 on aggregate and claim the trophy.
Standing at 1.74 meters, Chen was known for his blistering pace, earning him the nickname “Snake” within the team and “Monkey Foot” from fans. During a 1986 spring training in Kunming, he ran 100 meters in 11.5 seconds, faster than all tested players except the renowned “Seal” Li Huajun.
However, Chen’s game relied solely on speed. He lacked the creativity of Wu Yuhua, the flair of Huang Debao, or the sharp instincts of Ouyang Ting. Often, he would create scoring opportunities with his pace but fail to convert due to poor decision-making and finishing. With stiff competition from more seasoned teammates, Chen gradually faded into the background, ultimately ending his career with the Guangdong team after the 1990 season.
After retiring, Chen played in the Hong Kong league for a time before moving into football administration. He served as secretary-general of the Guangzhou Baiyun District Football Association and later as vice chairman of the Guangzhou Football Association.
