Celta Vigo is on the verge of securing a second European qualification with a squad filled with some of the youngest academy talents in recent memory. Claudio Giráldez, a homegrown coach whose entire technical staff was formed at A Madroa, has built his team with a profitable blend of youth, crafting one of the most brilliant chapters in the club’s modern history.
Guided by experienced figures like Iago Aspas and Borja Iglesias, Celta’s new generation of talent is shining early in Spain’s top flight. Their influence and self-developed talent are only comparable to clubs with a strong academy tradition like Barcelona, Athletic Club, and Real Sociedad. On average, six academy graduates start matches for Celta this season, and often at least that many finish them.
Last Sunday, during the historic victory over Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano, none of the three young academy players in the starting lineup—Javi Rodríguez, Yoel Lago, and Fer López—had turned 23. Pablo Durán was under 26, and only Borja Iglesias clearly exceeded 30. This is just a glimpse of a striking statistic: in just over two seasons, Celta’s under-26 academy graduates have accumulated 516 appearances in La Liga. Some of them, like Javi Rodríguez, Yoel Lago, and Jones (who played for the reserve team last season), still hold B-team registrations.
The most experienced of these new talents from A Madroa is Javi Rodríguez. The player from Poio, who has already made 66 top-flight appearances, forms a recognizable starting trio in defense alongside Marcos Alonso and the injured Carl Starfelt in Giráldez’s ever-changing lineup. Javi, who debuted for the first team in August 2024 at La Cerámica, has already surpassed Carlos Domínguez (64 appearances) in La Liga, even though the Vigo-born center-back made his first-team debut under Eduardo Coudet three years earlier.
Javi and Carlos lead a list of academy graduates that includes Hugo Álvarez (64), Hugo Sotelo (63), Pablo Durán (58), Sergio Carreira (57), Fer López (31), Javi Rueda (24), Jones El Abdellaoui (21), Miguel Román (19), Yoel Lago (18), and Manu Fernández (14). Including Damián Rodríguez, currently on loan at Racing Santander, the total rises to 516.
This high number of top-flight appearances is complemented by significant contributions from the young academy graduates in the Europa League, where Celta reached the quarterfinals with impressive performances from youngsters like Javi Rueda (key in the historic win against Olympique Lyon), Pablo Durán (scorer of three goals in the competition), Fer López (with that stunning goal in Belgrade that helped Celta advance from the group stage), and Miguel Román (decisive in the conquest of the Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki). Particularly noteworthy is the case of the midfielder from Gondomar, the revelation of the season, whose impact could have been even greater had he not suffered a serious injury in March.
The growing prominence of this new academy generation in La Liga has not only benefited Celta on the pitch but also provided financial relief for the club during a period of economic difficulty. The sale of Fer López to Wolverhampton for 23 million euros last summer helped Celta balance their current budget, and many young academy players have seen their market value skyrocket in just two seasons.
