A standout performance or a crucial injury can dramatically alter a team’s fortunes in March Madness, which is in full swing. Here’s a roundup of key injuries, news, and developments across men’s and women’s college basketball as the 2026 NCAA Tournament progresses.
May 8: Iowa Extends Coach Ben McCollum
The Hawkeyes have locked in their head coach with a six-year contract extension, as reported by ESPN. McCollum’s new deal follows Iowa’s run to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1987, where they entered as a No. 9 seed. That run included a stunning upset over the No. 1-seeded defending national champion Florida Gators in the second round. Iowa finished the 2025-26 season—McCollum’s first at the helm—with a 24-13 overall record and 10-10 in Big Ten play, placing ninth in the conference. Before Iowa, McCollum spent one season at Drake, leading the Bulldogs to a 31-4 record, an NCAA Tournament berth, and earning 2024-25 Missouri Valley Coach of the Year honors. He previously coached Northwest Missouri State for 15 years.
May 7: Michigan and Florida Headline New Players Era Fields
The Players Era tournament is expanding from 18 to 24 teams this year, splitting into two separate events. The two most recent national champions will lead stacked fields. Michigan, which won the national title in April, will compete in the Players Era Sixteen during Thanksgiving week in Las Vegas. The Wolverines defeated Gonzaga 101-61 to win last year’s Players Era title and are expected to contend again despite nine new players on the roster. Florida, the national champion a year ago and a potential preseason No. 1, will play in the Players Era Eight a week earlier. The Gators boast possibly the nation’s best frontcourt with the returns of Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon, plus Rueben Chinyelu if he opts out of the 2026 NBA Draft. Florida didn’t play in the event last year but opened its season in Las Vegas with a 93-87 loss to Arizona. The Players Era and ESPN also announced a multiyear agreement for the men’s tournaments, though financial details were not disclosed. A women’s tournament was held last year, but no announcement has been made about a 2026 edition. The Players Era Eight field includes Florida, Auburn, Houston, Kansas, Notre Dame, Rutgers, UNLV, and West Virginia. The Players Era Sixteen features Michigan, Alabama, Baylor, Creighton, Gonzaga, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Oregon, St. John’s, San Diego State, Tennessee, Texas Christian, and Texas Tech.
April 29: Otzelberger Signs 10-Year Extension with Iowa State
Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger has agreed to a 10-year contract extension that raises his annual salary to $6 million, athletic director Jamie Pollard announced. Otzelberger led the Cyclones to a 29-8 record and their third NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in five seasons this past year. He holds a 124-53 record since becoming head coach in 2021-22. “Coach Otzelberger has elevated our men’s basketball program into a perennial NCAA Tournament and Top 25 team,” Pollard said. “This contract extension demonstrates Iowa State University’s commitment to him by making him one of the highest paid basketball coaches in the country. We are excited to reward him for the success we have enjoyed during his first five years leading the Cyclones and we look forward to continued success under his leadership.” The Cyclones have appeared in 52 consecutive Associated Press Top 25 polls and finished No. 8 in the final rankings. Otzelberger inherited a program coming off a 2-22 season in 2020-21 and has led it to five straight NCAA Tournament bids. He is the only coach in program history to take multiple teams to the Sweet 16, and his 30 wins over Top 25 opponents set a school record. “We are humbled and grateful to continue leading a program that means so much to us,” Otzelberger said. “Iowa State is home for my family.”
